A Recent History

The IrsiCaixa Institute for AIDS Research was established on 12th January 1995 with the aim of conducting, promoting and divulging biomedical research in the field of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), under the direction of Dr. Bonaventura Clotet.

On 6th March 1995 it was registered and classified as a scientific charity with the autonomous Catalan government’s Department of Justice and is subject to its legislation.

Since its inception, IrsiCaixa has pursued a policy of hiring prestigious international researchers, thanks to the financial support of the Fundació La Caixa and the Department of Health of the autonomous Catalan government. The increase in the number of researchers has been accompanied by improvements in both the quantity and quality of its scientific publications, leading to the Irsi Caixa to be considered as Catalonia’s second most prestigious research centre, and both a national and international reference.

In December 2008, Irsi Caixa signed a collaboration agreement with ESTEVE, which also included La Caixa Bank Social Projects and the Departments of Health & Innovation, Universities and Companies of the autonomous Catalan government and the Fundació Clìnic, to set up one of the most ambitious consortiums at international level for the development of vaccines against AIDS, which featured the collaboration of local government, the research community and the private sector.

The research and development project into an AIDS vaccine known as HIVACAT (“HIV Vaccine Catalonia”) is a joint venture with the AIDS and Infectious Diseases Service from Barcelona’s Hospital Clìnic, with a budget of €13 million for the period 2008-2011. ESTEVE will intervene in the research process at the stage of vaccine tests with people, taking responsibility for subsequent clinical development and marketing.
