Master in AIDS pathogenesis and treatment (2nd edition)

The identification of HIV and its strong impact on the world's population have meant a quantitative and qualitative change in research on retrovirology. Advances in the last 25 years have allowed to expand our knowledge about this virus and to define treatment regimens, establishing a foundation for the development of vaccines and eradication strategies. Human retrovirology has become one of the most dynamic areas in biomedicine and the strong development of this area requires specialized professionals with extensive virological and immunological knowledge.

virological and immunological knowledge. This Master provides, for the first time, a broad view of these topics with special emphasis on antiretroviral treatment and the likely only ways to eradicate the virus: the development of an effective vaccine. In addition, this Master puts emphasis on other retroviruses and their potential involvement in several human diseases. Due to the experimental and international character of this course, in the first edition the number of students will be limited, and students should understand and be able to express themselves in English.

The creation of a Master in AIDS pathogenesis and treatment emerged as a result of the need for professionals with specific expertise in clinical and basic research. Despite the existence of excellent specific training programs in the fields of immunology and microbiology, the growing importance of human retrovirology requires the creation of a specific training program.

The University of Barcelona (UAB) and the AIDS Research Institute Irsicaixa strive to provide an excellent education and a global perspective that allows developing useful specific skills for the job placement of University graduates. Specifically, HIV research is a pioneer in the creation of large international collaborative projects to face the serious problem of the pandemic. To further this vision we have developed a collaborative master with one of the best HIV research centers worldwide that coordinate the global effort in the fight against HIV: the Ragon Institute (MGH, MIT and Harvard) and the Section of Retroviral Therapeutics of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Harvard Medical School). Support from the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine Medicine (University of Miami) and the Center for AIDS Research (University of California San Diego) is also expected for the next edition. This Master also integrates the industry, through the participation of representatives of Esteve Laboratories in their lectures on “Patents in Biomedical Research”.
