Dr. Bonaventura Clotet, MD, PhDclotet bdebate


Specialized in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. PhD in Medical Sciences in 1981 (Incidence and clinical significance of anti-ENA antibodies in connective tissue diseases).


Dr. Bonaventura Clotet received his MD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1976 and his PhD in 1981 for his investigations on surrogate markers for connective tissue diseases.   

He is Head of the HIV Unit since 1987 and Director of the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute at the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, in Badalona, Barcelona, Spain since 1993.  He is also President of the Fight against AIDS Foundation, founded in 1992. Since 2006, he is co-director of the HIVACAT programme for HIV Vaccine Research in Catalonia, Spain. Indeed, he is associated professor of Medicine at the Universitat Autonòma de Barcelona (UAB) since 1986, and Director and Professor of the "Chair of AIDS and related diseases" at the University of Vic (UVic-UCC) since October 2013. Since 2011, he is the director of the Master in AIDS Pathogenesis and Treatment (Escoles Universitàries Gimbernat-UAB-IrsiCaixa).

Dr. Clotet is member of the steering committee of EuroSIDA (multicenter group for the study of AIDS in Europe) since 1994 and his retrovirology laboratory at the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute is the reference lab for HIV resistance in Europe through EuroSIDA. He has been member of the Drug Resistance Mutations Group (IAS-USA) during 10 years, until July 2011, and of the Governing Council of the IAS during 8 years, until July 2010. He also participates in the organizing committee and scientific committee of several drug resistance workshops and international AIDS conferences; indeed, he is an active member of the Spanish Expert Commission for the Evaluation of Research projects in the National Programme of Health and national AIDS Programme. Dr. Clotet has been co-chair of Track B for the Barcelona World AIDS meeting 2002.

He has published more than 750 papers in international journals (average citations per item: 24.42; h-index: 77). He is a member of the editorial board of AIDS JournalHIV MedicineExpert Review of Clinical ImmunologyFuture HIV therapy and Journal of the International Association of Physician in AIDS Care. He is reviewer for AIDSJAIDSJID, Antiviral TherapyHIV MedicineCIDLancetLancet Infectious Diseases and Drugs.

Dr. Clotet was co-director (together with Dr. Josep M. Gatell) of AIDS Cyberjournal (ACJ) integrated in Timely Topics in AIDS (TTM-sida Prous), from 1997 to 2006. Since 2007, he coordinates educasida with ACJ, offering continuous medical update about HIV & related diseases, and also providing free consult and advice to HIV infected patients.

Scientific Advisory Board Member of Fundació Príncep de Girona between 2009 and 2015, and Expert Group member of the European HIV/AIDS & Infectious Diseases Academy since June 2009.

In October 2010 he was awarded by the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) for his lifetime scientific career.

In March 2012 he was the co-chair for the 10th European Meeting on HIV & Hepatitis, held in Barcelona. In April 2012, he was the co-chair of the 13 International Workshops on Clinical Pharmacology of HIV Therapy, held in Barcelona. In May, he organized (together with Charles Boucher, Wei He and Aikichi Iwamotto) the 1st Asian Conference on treatment of Viral Diseases in Beijing, China. In October, he was awarded by the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) with the Josep Trueta medal to Sanitary Merit for his contributions to the research in the HIV field.

In April 2013, Dr. Bonaventura Clotet received the Honoris Causa award at the University Carol Davila in Bucharest (Romania) and the Honor Membership award of the Institut Medicofarmacèutic de Catalunya. In May, he organized the 2nd Asian Conference on Hepatitis and HIV in Beijing, China, together with Charles Boucher, We He, Taisheng Li, Stephan Locarnini, Jürgen Rockstroh, Jonathan Schapiro and Aikichi Iwamoto.

In October 2013, Dr. Clotet became member of CASOST (Consell Assessor per a la Sostenibilitat I el Progres del Sistema Sanitari), created to provide advice to the President of the Government of Catalonia about how the Health System should be structured, and received the award "Premi a l'excel·lència professional 2013" by the Col·legi Oficial de Metges de Barcelona (COMB).

He was the local host of the 8th International Workshop on HIV Transmission, Barcelona 4-5 October 2013, and the co-chair, together with Dr José M. Gatell and Dr. Christian Brander, of the AIDS Vaccine Conference, held in Barcelona on 7-10th October 2013, organized by the HIV Vaccine Enterprise and with HIVACAT as local host. In november, he was the co-chair of the 1st European Roundtable on Future Management of HIV (Barcelona, 22-23 November).

In May 2014, he organized (together with Charles Boucher, Wei He, Taisheng Li, Stephan Locarnini, Jürgen Rockstroh and Aikichi Iwamotto) the Third Asian Conference on Hepatitis and HIV in Beijing, China. In June, he was honored in the 1st edition of the Freedom Barcelona awards, fort its contribution to the fight against AIDS. In October, he was co-chair of the 2nd European Roundtable on Future Management of HIV, held in Barcelona.

Recently, in February 2015, he has been appointed  member of the Royal Medical Academy of Catalonia. In May, he organized (together with Charles Boucher, Wei He, Taisheng Li, Stephan Locarnini, Jürgen Rockstroh and Aikichi Iwamotto) the Fourth Asian Conference on Hepatitis and HIV in Xian, China. In June, he has been co-chair of the 13th European HIV & Hepatitis Workshop 2015, held in Barcelona. Since June 22nd, hi is a staff member in Biology Sciences of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans.

Dr Clotet’s team is composed by 110 people working at the clinics and at the lab focusing on HIV, hepatitis, immune system and cancer, papillomavirus, metagenomics and aging.
